Enable Traffic Mirroring for EC2 Instance Type
AWS regularly introduces new EC2 instance families and sizes. In earlier releases, GigaVUE-FM do not allow Cloud Suite deployments or traffic mirroring for AWS instance types released after the AWS SDK version bundled with GigaVUE-FM, because those newer instance types were not yet recognized by the SDK or by GigaVUE-FM’s instance validation logic.
GigaVUE-FM maintains a registry that tracks whether each AWS EC2 instance type is allowed for VPC Traffic Mirroring. You can use the GigaVUE-FM UI (or the REST API) to explicitly enable or disable mirroring support for one or more instance types. Your role must have permission to configure AWS mirroring to change this configuration.
For more information related to permissions and privileges, refer to Permissions and Privileges (AWS).
For supported EC2 instance types, refer to Recommended and Supported Instance Types for AWS.
Benefits:
| Use newer AWS instance types sooner, without waiting for a GigaVUE-FM or FM/SDK upgrade. |
| Reduce delays during POCs and production expansions. |
| Track administrative changes using RBAC and audit logs. |
Discover and Apply Mirroring Support
GigaVUE-FM collects AWS inventory through periodic inventory jobs and monitoring domain refreshes, then derives instance families from the discovered instance types.
For every new instance family discovered, GigaVUE-FM enables mirroring support for all instance types in that family by default, regardless of whether AWS actually supports traffic mirroring for that instance type. If an instance type is never selected for a monitoring session, the default setting has no impact. If an instance type is selected and traffic mirroring fails, indicating there is no mirroring support and automatically disables mirroring support for that instance family during the next inventory collection cycle. Any instance already deployed in a monitoring session that belongs to an unsupported family is automatically removed during the same cycle.
This is an automatic, self-correcting process that requires no admin intervention under normal circumstances. However, an admin can manually enable or disable traffic mirroring for an instance family using the UI before creating a monitoring session, if required.
Enable Traffic Mirroring using GigaVUE-FM
You can enable or disable traffic mirroring in GigaVUE-FM UI using the following steps:
To enable mirroring:
| 1. | Go to Inventory > VIRTUAL > AWS. The Monitoring Domain page appears. |
| 2. | In the Monitoring Domain page, select Settings > Instance Configuration. The Instance Type page appears. You can view the Instance Family Category, Instance Family, Mirroring Support and Configured By details in this page. |
| 3. | Click the Three Dots menu or Actions dropdown, and select Enable Mirroring or Disable Mirroring option as required. |
| 4. | Click Filter to filter the records based on the columns in the Instance Type page. |
