License Models

Gigamon offers various licensing models based on how the license is bound to the deployment and how long the license remains valid.

In addition to how licenses are bound, Gigamon licenses are also categorized by duration:

Term Licenses

These are time-bound licenses and include two types:

Evaluation Licenses - These are short-term licenses valid for 60 days, intended for evaluation purposes. You must upgrade to a fully licensed version once the evaluation period ends.
Subscription Licenses - Available as monthly or multi-year subscriptions (1, 3, 5, or 7 years). These licenses expire at the end of the subscription term and can either be renewed or upgraded to a different licensing model.
Software and feature usability - Limited to the license validity period.
Support- Elite support is included for the duration of the license.

Perpetual Licenses

These are one-time purchase licenses that do not expire.

Software and feature usability – Not time-bound.
Support - Elite support is included with the license purchase.

Fixed Licensing Model

This model is also known as Node-locked licenses.

This model ties the license to a specific hardware component, either a card or device serial number. The license remains fixed to that hardware and cannot be moved.


Node-locked licenses can be managed either from the GigaVUE-FM GUI or using the Command Line Interface.

License key is generated through the licensing portal.
You can manage the licenses from the CLI or through the GigaVUE-FM GUI.
Automatic renewal of licenses is not supported. You must manually create the license in the Licensing Portal, import the licenses to GigaVUE-FM and assign the new licenses in GigaVUE-FM.

Flexible Licensing Model

This model is also known as Floating licenses.

Licenses are not attached to a specific card or device. They can be moved or reassigned across cards within a device or even across devices, offering greater deployment flexibility.

GigaSMART application licenses can be moved across the devices or cards. You can move licenses only within the same device type.
GigaVUE-FM must be installed for managing floating licenses.

License file with pooled floating licenses is generated in License Portal, and imported into GigaVUE-FM through GUI.

You can manage the licenses using GigaVUE-FM.

Automatic renewal of licenses is supported.

Volume-based Licensing Model

This model is based on usage volume.
Licenses are offered as base bundles (CoreVUE, NetVUE, SecureVUE PLUS), with optional add-ons, and are typically used for cloud-based deployments.

License file with bundled volume license is generated in the License Portal, and imported into GigaVUE-FM through the GUI.
